My Credentials

NORMA GARDNER Counsellor & Cognitive Behavioural Therapist

Psychology BSc (Hons), Dip. Counselling, MSc in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. BABCP and BACP registered.

"I believe that the relationship between therapist and client is at the heart of successful therapy, regardless of the approach used."

I currently work in the NHS and private sector, regularly seeing adults and young people, from eleven years upwards, with a wide range of issues. I have also worked with children in both state and private schools. Issues that I deal with on a regular basis include anxiety, depression, phobias, panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, relationship problems, anger, habits such as facial tics, drug or alcohol abuse and sleep problems.

I have a BSc (Hons) degree in Psychology, completed my diploma in Person-Centred Counselling in 2006 and gained an MSc in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in 2011. I am a member of the British Psychological Society, and an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and the British Association for Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies.

In 2012 I returned from a year of practice in Hong Kong where I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of living in such a vibrant and exciting part of the world and worked as a Counsellor and Cognitive Behavioural Therapist in an international doctors’ practice.

Prior to becoming a Counsellor, my career was with British Airways as a Training and Performance Executive which involved training as well as career counselling. I also worked in recruitment and assessment centres with British Airways for many years. During this time I had the opportunity to assist with ‘Fear of Flying’ courses and it was this that fired my enthusiasm to work with people helping them to overcome their fears and live fuller lives. I am originally from Ireland but have lived and worked in Buckinghamshire for more than twenty years. I have also lived in the Middle East and West Africa.

‘I believe as human beings we are all unique. We have our own ways of thinking, feeling, behaving and have the ability to work through our difficulties and carry on with our lives in a more positive way. I aim to maintain a respectful professional relationship with honesty, care and compassion and listen carefully to both verbal and non-verbal messages with empathy and respect.’

I would welcome the opportunity to work with you whatever the challenges and issues you are facing.
